Eye Microsurgery Center has been created

The Eye Microsurgery Center was created on December 19, 2005 in the Volyn Regional Children's Territorial Medical Center for delivering microsurgical help to patients with different kinds of cataracts: congenital, traumatic, secondary, age-specific; with glaucoma and vision organs traumas.

Realizing the state program “Children of Ukraine”, the Children’s Ophthalmology Department is provided with new diagnostic and treatment equipment for conducting up-to-date high-level cataract surgery. Above all the equipment includes phacoemulsificator "Millenium" - apparatus for removing cloudy lens with the help of ultrasound through small tunnel incision that contributes to better healing, minimal traumatization of eye tissues, makes possible implantation of artificial lens into the capsule sac, including soft (flexible) intraocular lenses. Especially good results are received when removing immature half-cloudy lenses that allow not waiting for traditional cataract maturing during several months or years.

Physicians of the Department have mastered the phacoemulsification method and have the appropriate certificates to perform replacing artificial lens microsurgery. The certificates are issued by the Odesa Institute of Eye Diseases named after Academician Filatov.

We perform preoperative examination of patients using a refractometer and an ultrasound scanner according to the contemporary techniques, namely: measuring size of an eyeball and refraction capacity and, on this basis, determining the necessary size of an artificial lens. All that ensures getting high visual functions after the surgery.

After specialized training physicians conduct surgeries in secondary cataracts with the help of a laser for eye anterior part which greatly improves vision functions. Laser beam creates a small “window” in posterior capsule restoring vision. This procedure is completely painless. Earlier help to such patients was delivered only in big republican clinics; now there is a possibility of performing such surgeries to people of different age in our region.

During the Center inauguration

We introduced computer-aided eye pneumotonometry for glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure) early detection and pressure control during treatment. This is a noncontact method of measuring intraocular pressure; it doesn’t require anesthesia and allows quick measuring both in adults and children beginning from 4-5 years of age. Automatic ophthalmotonometer is especially handy for patients with eye inflammatory diseases because of allergic reactions to anesthetic eye drops.
